Job Description for Project Quantity Surveyor

A project quantity surveyor works on controlling budgets for specific projects within a certain company. Project quantity surveyors are usually given a minimum and maximum spending amount, and must adhere to the range of that budget. It is a mentally challenging job, because one has to balance the money spent for labor, materials, and fixing mistakes, while still staying below the maximum available spending limit to be successful. This would be an indoor job in which one has to record all numbers, and the numbers have to be exactly accurate, meaning the project quantity surveyor will be using a calculator very often. Someone who is great with numbers and knows a great deal about the tasks at hand is ideal for this job. This would normally be a day job in which the project quantity surveyor is working in a quiet office and will be working closely with management officials of the company to make sure that the budget is being used for the right things. Also, management will be close by to tell the project quantity surveyor about any changes that will be made for the projects. In most cases, a project quantity surveyor will be responsible for keeping all accounts recorded, paying for supplies and contractors, submitting bids, and finding additional funding sources. Project quantity surveyors normally work for companies in engineering, government, architectural designs, housing associations, and construction. A project quantity surveyor needs to be independent, have strong IT skills, and be a team player.
