Job Description for Secondary School Teacher

A secondary school teacher works to further the education of all of his or her students. Secondary school teachers are required to instruct via lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and any other methods they find useful in one or more subjects. A secondary school teacher must also be capable of enforcing behavioral and procedural rules in the classroom in order to maintain an optimal learning environment. The secondary school teacher creates, administers, and grades tests and assignments in order to evaluate student progress. It is important that a secondary school teacher work well with young adults and be able to instruct them and facilitate learning.
A secondary school teacher works indoors in a classroom located in a center of learning such as a school or university. He or she typically works independently, but may work alongside a teaching assistant or fellow teacher depending upon the size of the class or the difficulty of the subject material being taught. The job is not physically demanding, but it can be mentally taxing. A secondary school teacher must be fully knowledgeable about all aspects of the subject he or she is teaching, and should able to answer any and all questions the students may have regarding the subject matter. In addition to being knowledgeable about the subject, a secondary school teacher must also be able to transfer that learning to the students. He or she must be capable of explaining the material in a way that others can understand. Teaching certifications are often required for secondary school teachers. The typical day of a teacher may range from standard school hours (morning to mid afternoon) if he or she teaches multiple subjects, or just a few hours a day if only one subject is taught.

  • Create, administer, and grade tests and assignments to measure students' progress.
  • Establish and enforce behavioral and procedural rules.
  • Instruct via lectures, discussions, and demonstrations in one or more subjects at the post primary level.
  • Maintain student records.
