Job Description for Support Engineer, Information Technology (IT)

An information technology (IT) support engineer ensures that all of the technological systems that the company uses are maintained and operational. The day-to-day activities of an IT support engineer vary, as new problems and issues may arise because of general wear-and-tear or new problems in software and technology. In addition, the engineer is an importance piece in communicating to other staff how the company's software and hardware work to other staff; this means that IT support engineers frequently talk with members of other departments that have issues with their information systems, to fix and explain the problems they are having.
The requirements for becoming an IT support engineer are extensive. An associate's, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in information technology or a related field is necessary, as a great deal of specialized knowledge is necessary to diagnose and fix problems. In addition, most companies require certifications and proficiency in a wide variety of computer programs and procedures, including Cisco, CompTia, and Microsoft.
Support Engineer, Information Technology (IT) Tasks
  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair hardware, software, printers, phone and AV equipment.
  • Review, audit, and revise policies affecting security and operability of hardware and software.
  • Diagnose and solve problems with hardware, software, and network.
  • Order equipment and software and coordinate with vendors.
