Youth ministry leaders, or youth pastors, are responsible for developing, coordinating, and administering an effective student ministry program in a place of learning. They work in high schools, universities, and churches around the world. Youth pastors aim to connect with young adults and give them fellowship and guidance. They lead services and worship studies for groups of young people.
A youth pastor should be able to multi-task and communicate effectively, especially with young people. He or she must provide room for spiritual growth and possess a passion for helping others. The environment is fast-paced and constantly changing. Youth pastors must build and manage a ministry to which young people can relate. Leadership experience in youth ministry or the church is helpful for candidates in this field. As team players, they can encourage young people to assume leadership roles.
First and foremost, a youth pastor should have a solid commitment to the faith and values of the associated church. Secondly, a theological or Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies is necessary to teach young people. Seminary or post-graduate education in a related area is highly favored. Spiritual maturity is required in order to set a good example for young adults.
Youth pastors are usually salaried, full-time employees. Their work schedules are flexible, but youth pastors should be willing to work long or late hours to accommodate the schedules of students. In addition to space for worship and learning, they often have their own private offices within religious organizations and learning facilities.
Youth Pastor Tasks
- Promote community outreach and involvement for youths according to the Church's mission.
- Recruit and train youth for mission trips.
- Lead weekly meetings and activities for youth and the youth bible study.
