Cardiovascular surgery nurse practitioners work as part of a cardiovascular surgery team to provide high-quality patient care. Duties performed by these nurse practitioners before surgery include recording medical history, explaining surgical procedures and answering any questions that may arise. During surgery (including preparations for surgery), they check vitals, prepare the site where the surgery will take place, drape patients and prepare surgical tools; they also open the surgical location, operate cameras in the patient's body, provide suction, apply electrical leads to the patient if necessary and suture wounds, among other tasks.
