Engineering consultants are responsible for providing accurate and effective engineering advice on a variety of projects within their organization. They are responsible for using critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to make engineering processes more efficient, save company resources, and increase profitability. They also develop engineering strategies to streamline product/service production and implementation.
Engineering consultants must have strong communication skills and expert knowledge of multiple areas of engineering to oversee project completions from concept and model to delivery. They must also have leadership skills to motivate engineering professionals to surpass expectations on a regular basis. They are often the first point of contact between engineering managers and clients, and may also serve as mentors and take part in training sessions to stay updated on new engineering equipment and software.
Those in this position must be proficient with computer-aided design applications and know how to read technical drawings, as well as understand multiple engineering programs to modify features, measures, and processes. Engineering consultants often attend business meetings to provide ideas to modify various features after testing/feedback sessions have been conducted, as well as identify processes to be improved by utilizing newer technology. They generally work with other consultants in fast-paced environments to meet strict deadlines for engineering projects; however, they should also have strong organizational abilities to stay on track and require minimal supervision to complete tasks in a timely manner.
A bachelor's degree in an engineering field is generally required for this position, and prior experience as a consultant is highly beneficial. Industry and leadership certifications are also helpful.
