Lobbyists are typically employed by public relation firms, trade organizations, labor unions, and public interest groups. Lobbyists should have includes previous experience in public relations and have a network of policymakers and other public officials. They must be able to fully understand their clients’ interests, in regard to active legislation. Their strong communication skills are useful for reinforcing their clients’ positions on important issues. Knowledge of other interest groups that hold positions related to the clients' positions is useful as well. They should be able to prepare well-written and thoughtful press releases and informational publications. They may be required to represent their clients in the media. Some other responsibilities include scheduling meetings with legislators, responding to questions, and testifying in public hearings. As the name implies, this is a management position, so related experience and duties may be required.
Senior lobbyists are required to register with government agencies and report all funds spent, in order to comply with the necessary guidelines. Lobbyists should be in touch with current news items and legislative activities related to their clients' interests. While there are no set educational requirements, it is recommended that lobbyists have at least a bachelor's degree in political science, public relations, or a related field.
