Plastic extrusion operators generally work in areas of plastics manufacturing, aerospace manufacturing, and automotive manufacturing. Generally, it takes about one year or longer to learn the job's ins and outs. However, learning how to use an extruding machine in this particular job takes much longer than a year. Typically, all of the work takes place inside a well-ventilated area (due to plastic fumes) of a building. The machines used by plastic extrusion operators produce all sizes of tubes, hoses, and wires for wiring. Those in this position are also responsible for quality-testing, meaning they must test the tubes and wires which are made via the extruder.
Plastic extrusion operators must have an extreme eye for detail, as they have to maintain their machines at all times. Their work shifts are typically 8 to 10 hours per day with weekends off, though this often depends on the company.
Those working to attain this position do have to compete with outsourcing, as companies frequently outsource this type of work other countries, and job growth is slow in this sector.
