A strategic analyst is responsible for identifying the needs of their business and developing plans to determine the overall direction it should take to succeed. These analysts are employed in a variety of fields, though they are typically found in the IT, financial, banking, computer, and business fields.
Those in this position normally work in an office during traditional business hours, Monday through Friday. A Bachelor’s degree in an area such as Business, Information Management, Computer Science, or a related field is generally required for this position, and many employers now require a Master’s degree. Most employers also require several years of relevant experience, and many provide additional training within the field.
A strategic analyst is primarily responsible for developing key business decisions and solutions by gathering, reviewing, and testing data in a number of ways. This person will have a variety of additional duties, including: securing information and resources, allocating resources, managing subordinates’ schedules, facilitating meetings among subordinates and other analysts, acquiring/developing effective software, developing analytic systems, and managing each process along the way.
Strategic analysts should possess superior organizational and management skills and always be willing to learn and develop their trade. They must be able to communicate effectively with subordinates, supervisors, and teammates, both verbally and electronically. Critical thinking skills are an absolute must, and it is imperative that this person can develop “out of the box” solutions for seemingly-ordinary problems.
