SMU alumni can most commonly be found in the telecommunications industry, the software development industry, and IT services, though they are employed throughout a wide range of sectors. The aerospace and defense industry registers as the most common industry among alumni. Starting salaries of $74K are the median among SMU grads.

After graduation, women go on to earn an average of $60K per year compared to men, who earn about $90K.

The most generous salaries among SMU alumni are reportedly earned by Principal Systems Engineers, whose median earnings come to $124K, followed by Information Technology Managers (approximately $110K) and Senior Software Engineers (around $92K). Relative to other positions, compensation dwindles for Marketing Coordinators; alumni in this role face average salaries of $40K.

Upon earning their degrees, many SMU grads prefer to remain in Dallas; in fact, around two in five grads appreciate the area so much that they find permanent jobs there. The top-paying city popular with SMU alumni is Fort Worth, Texas, which offers a median salary of about $97K. On the other end, SMU grads flock to Washington, DC, which actually offers the weakest median salary of $57K. Graduates of SMU also relocate to Austin, Texas, which is not far away, and Houston, Texas.

Degree Major

A graduate with a Master of Science (MS), Engineering Management from SMU can rake in a whopping average $140K per year, more than any other degree from this school. On the other end of the spectrum, those with a Bachelor of Science in Economics tend to do the worst in terms of salary, making an average approximately $40K per year.

SMU grads are usually competent in Project Management, and just under a fifth of alumni continue practicing this skill in their career. Competency in Operations Management translates into above-average pay for former Mustangs — they earn 35 percent more than their fellow graduates. Demonstrated ability in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and Marketing Communications rank among leading skills as well.

Benefits and Perks

Only two-fifths of alumni earn paid vacation and just one in three grads get paid sick time. Health coverage is awarded to most former students, and dental insurance is issued to a strong majority of grads as well. To plan for old age, a large number of grads maintain savings accounts through a company's 401(k) plan. Southern Methodist University alumni are rewarded with additional benefits, such as a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and flexible hours.

Related Schools

Among alumni of similar schools, Catholic University of America grads (who make an average of $71K) earn salaries most similar to SMU alumni. Saint Louis University-Main Campus, the University of Denver, and Claremont Graduate University are also similar to SMU.
