In the SMU alumni community, men make a median salary of about $91K compared to their female counterparts, who earn $60K.


In the SMU alumni professional community, Principal Systems Engineers make the highest median pay ($124K), though Information Technology Managers ($110K), and Senior Systems Engineers (around $97K) are close competitors. Ranking last in the compensation department are those holding a Bachelor of Science in Economics — their annual income amounts to around $40K on average.


Just under a fifth of grads report using Project Management as part of their job, making it the most popular skill. For former Mustangs, proficiency in Strategic Planning warrants a paycheck that is 50 percent more than other alumni salaries. In addition, those who are savvy in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and Engineering Design are also considered highly skilled.

Benefits and Perks

Only about two-fifths of alumni enjoy paid vacation and one in three grads receive sick leave. To plan for old age, most respondents maintain savings accounts through a company's 401(k) plan. Dental insurance applies to a strong majority of graduates, and a large number of survey participants report health coverage. Graduates of Southern Methodist University are also recipients of a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and flexible hours.
