Graduates of SMU work in a variety of sectors including the financial services industry, the software development industry, and the real estate development industry. The most popular field is the aerospace and defense industry. Very few SMU grads go into the banking industry; in fact, less than five percent of alumni enter this industry. Starting salaries of around $72K are the median among SMU grads.

It's worth noting that female graduates earn a median salary of about $59K whereas the men's median is $86K.

Among SMU graduates, the biggest earners are Principal Systems Engineers, who haul in approximately $124K on average. Next on the list are Marketing Directors and Senior Software Engineers, bringing in $92K each. Relative to other positions, compensation dwindles for Marketing Coordinators; alumni in this role face average salaries of $48K.

For reasons other than money, SMU grads are most commonly found still living in Dallas, Texas, where median pay sits at the bottom of the pay scale ($68K). For those seeking more money, San Francisco, Calif. is a popular destination for former SMU students; median pay is $110K. SMU alumni express interest in nearby Houston, Texas and Austin, Texas as well.

Degree Major

A graduate with a Doctorate (PhD) from SMU can rake in a whopping average approximately $163K per year, more than any other degree from this school. The degree that warrants the lowest level of financial compensation is a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (around $43K on average annually).

Former Mustangs with Systems Engineering experience garner salaries that are 45 percent more than other grads' salaries. SMU grads are usually competent in Project Management, and just under one in five alumni continue practicing this skill in their career. Other top skills include Microsoft Excel, Marketing Management, and Microsoft Office.

Benefits and Perks

Though vacation and sick days are paid for some, these benefits are reported by the minority of graduates (two-fifths of alumni and one in four survey participants, respectively). Most former students plan for retirement by taking advantage of a company-sponsored 401(k) program. It is no small feat that most graduates are given health coverage, and a fair number of alumni accept dental insurance. Southern Methodist University graduates also take advantage of a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and flexible hours.

Related Schools

Alumni of Catholic University of America pick up average paychecks of $73K, which is closest to the amount made by SMU grads among similar schools. Saint Louis University-Main Campus, the University of Denver, and Claremont Graduate University are also similar to SMU.
