"Pride, Passion, personality."
Read coffee books, use online video sites to learn tips and tricks. Practice steaming milk with cold water and soap. Know every component on the machines you use by their names. Always know why and have a reason for the way you do things such as "cleaning steam arms to prevent cross contamination". Before going to an interview check out the store before hand and learn visually the type of machine/ equipment they use. If a customer isn't happy with a drink you have made apologise and offer to make a fresh one. More importantly make each customer an individual, get to know them and make them feel valued.

"Be valued."
Don't let your employer undervalue your skills. Work hard. Not everyone can be a good barista so if your boss isn't appreciating what you bring to the cafe, find somewhere that does. It isn't as mentally easy as people think.
