Job Description for Direct Support Worker
Direct support workers are responsible for assisting people with daily living activities who cannot perform them independently; this includes individuals with mental retardation, developmental disabilities, or medical disabilities such as stroke, heart attack, or trauma. These workers actively support patients in daily living, and are responsible for overseeing the programs implemented by their doctors or therapists. They often assist with minor around-the-house tasks such as cleaning and paying bills, as well.Read More...
Candidates for this position should be highly compassionate and able to assist patients in many ways, including some which require some physical effort, such as clothing and bathing. They must also be able to read and understand all medical orders, instructions, and prescriptions, and coordinate with the doctors and therapists who direct the care.

Direct Support Worker Tasks
- Change bed linens, wash and iron patients' laundry, and clean patients' quarters.
- Entertain, converse with, or read aloud to patients to keep them mentally healthy and alert.
- Direct patients in simple prescribed exercises or in the use of braces or artificial limbs.
- Check patients' pulse, temperature and respiration.
- Provide patients with help moving in and out of beds, baths, wheelchairs or automobiles, and with dressing and grooming.
