Driving instructors train people of different skill levels on how to correctly and safely operate vehicles. Instructors mainly work in vehicles with people who are either earning their license for the first time or those who have decided to make a career out of commercial driving (such as commercial truck drivers). Driving instructors must have a love for driving and enjoy helping people develop new skills. Instructors must have the patience to work through students' mistakes and have excellent interpersonal skills to effectively teach students and give them constructive feedback. Driving instructors' schedule typically correspond with students' needs, often including evenings and weekends, and driving lessons often last around an hour or two per pupil. The instructor's work environment largely consists of a vehicle in which they work with students.
Driving instructors generally must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a valid driver's license and state driving instructor license; one to five years of driving experienced is often necessary to get an instructor's license. Some employers may prefer applicants with teaching experience, and medical clearance may sometimes be required before an instructor's license is given.
