In recent years, there has been an increasing demand in the field of ophthalmology for experienced orthoptists, who work primarily with patients who suffer from eye-muscle disorders. Although orthoptists were traditionally trained in intern or hospital settings, a number of formal academic programs are now available in the United States and other countries around the world. Today, orthoptists generally work in medical office settings with patients affected by binocular vision disorders, and daily activities can range from general vision screening to diagnosing acute vision maladies and conditions stemming from a variety of neurological disorders. They often work in tandem with trained ophthalmologists to ensure a full range of treatment options.
