A senior-level executive, the communications specialist typically manages a communications department and assists in developing a consistent branding image. The specialist and his or her direct reports interact with marketing and advertising departments to help ensure that initiatives stay on message. They also write and edit press release, ensuring that the information released is presented accurately and as intended. The senior communications specialist may act as a point person for the media, and they may prepare other employees to serve as spokespeople as well. In any event, the senior communications specialist facilitates this interaction for actively seeking out and directing TV, radio, print, and web-based communication.
The senior communications specialist is also the main contact facilitator in cases of negative events or crisis management. They handles related media inquiries and work with other senior management to formulate responses. The specialist often develops talking points and related strategies to work through the detrimental events and best represent the organization in a positive light.
A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field is required for this position. To be considered for this senior position, a candidate must typically have five to 10 years of marketing communications, media relations, or public relations experience as well.
