Often times, shop assistants are on their feet for extended periods of time, so they must be comfortable standing for all or most of the day. They also should maintain a professional demeanor and exude a confident and calm manner to customers and suppliers. Shop assistants should feel comfortable speaking on the phone and handling customer service tasks. They may also be responsible for running a variety of machines, depending on their organization. They should be able to lift anywhere from 25 to 50 pounds as a job requirement, as they may need to unload trucks or move packages or machines around their office.
Usually a shop assistant position does not require a college degree; however, a high school degree may be required. Often, shop assistants are entry level jobs and they may work up to a higher position after having been employed for an extended period.
