In a manufacturing setting, a spray painter typically works with heavy pneumatic equipment that provides an even, steady coating of paint. The painter typically ensures that any reservoirs within the paint system are full and that colors and coatings are properly matched to the upcoming line run. He or she then carefully applies paint, using a spray mechanism in an even manner over all required areas of each part. Most of the paints used are of a quick-drying variety, and the painter must work with some skill and accuracy to ensure that an even, attractive coating is applied.
Spray painters typically do not need extensive education to be hired. However, manufacturers will typically give employment preference to those with prior work experience, so vocational training may help in job placement. Construction spray painters may be asked to apprentice when they start their careers. Manufacturing spray painters are typically subject to shiftwork in plants that can require days, evenings, and overnights. Construction painters typically work daytime hours.
