The fundamentals of the job can vary; some coaches may instruct children and teenagers, while others instruct adults. Classes may be taught in large groups, or on an individual basis. Some coaches will even help students reach the professional level, and may continue to coach them throughout their careers. Generally, there are no strict educational requirements for this job; however, exceptional tennis skills and prior coaching experience are often necessary. Tennis coaches must be able to recognize individual needs and determine which of a student's skills need improvement; from there, they can give special attention to those skills and perhaps create lesson plans accordingly. Most tennis courts are outdoors, so those in this position should not be sensitive to harsh weather conditions such as heat.
Above all, tennis coaches should have adequate physical strength and strong communication skills to teach effectively. Hours will vary greatly, and some positions will require coaches to be available on weekends. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
