Administrative supervisors act as a resource and mentor for employees, providing guidance and discipline as needed. They also work with other managers to coordinate administrative personnel's activities and manage daily workflow. Administrative supervisors work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, employment or payroll services organizations, client services programs, and other large businesses that deal with the public. This is typically a full-time job that takes place in an office setting, although overtime may be required depending on the needs of the employer.
Administrative supervisors must have clerical and supervisory experience to understand the job requirements of those they manage and efficiently direct them in their duties. Generally, these supervisors must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, although additional education may be required or preferred. At least five years' experience in a related setting is needed as well. For example, an administrative supervisor at a hospital may need at least five years of experience in the medical field, including a nursing degree and experience working as a nurse; an administrative supervisor at an accounting firm would need five years of experience working in some capacity in accounting.
