Camp directors oversee the performance of a camp and its employees, perform various management and administrative duties, and develop curricula for campers. Their job is a combination of physical and mental work and takes place both indoors in office settings and outside in various weather conditions, including extreme heat.Read More...
Camp directors work with staff members in and out of the office, including assistant camp directors, subordinates, and the recreation director, and are responsible for maintaining harmony between staff members. They also work with the public, including children and their parents, and must be able to communicate clearly with them.
A background in recreation with a specialization in elementary or early childhood education may be required for this position. Prospective camp directors must have a certain number of hours, generally at least 1,000, in the care and supervision of no fewer than four children. They are to be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license and certification in CPR and First Aid care by the American Red Cross; they must also undergo a child-abuse and sex-offender registry check and submit to driving checks and drug tests.
Camp directors' work schedules are typically planned in advance and occur Monday through Friday during normal business hours, but can also include weekends, early mornings, or late night hours depending on the circumstances. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
