In addition to knowing how to accurately and efficiently operate cash registers and handle sales transactions, a customer service cashier also normally processes returns and refunds for the store in line with store policies and procedures. In many retail settings, the customer service cashiers may also be asked to process and act as contact person for any layaway programs. If the business has some sort of frequent customer club or discount card program, the customer service cashier is normally in charge of helping to facilitate new member applications. They may be required to do some basic data entry related to these programs.
Finally, in most situations, the customer service cashier is given a supervisory role over the regular retail cashiers, acting as an intermediary between these employees and management. They may be needed to help process voided transactions or to answer questions the cashiers may have on pricing or sales promotions and the correct process by which these transactions are entered into the register or point of service (POS) system.
