Document control specialists serve as quality-control specialists for the literature a company releases to the public. These documents may include policies, manuals, user guides, and forms. Document control specialists primarily work in industries such as engineering or pharmaceutical manufacturing, where they fine-tune literature and manuals that the company releases to simplify the language and/or create clear instructions. They are often part of a technical writing team and are responsible for consistency, accuracy, and ability to be understood.Read More...
Document control specialists typically report to a technical supervisor, writing team supervisor, or group manager. They may receive direction from their managers or from other higher-level document control specialists within the organization. They may also work with other departments within the organization, such as engineers. Typically, document control specialists work inside of an office building during regular business hours. Depending on the industry, they may also work in an office inside of a manufacturing plant or facility.
Document control specialists must be skilled in word processing and database software, as well as have outstanding communication skills and attention to detail. They must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and working as part of a team. Most companies require document control specialists have college coursework in technical writing, English, computer science, or a related field.
