Elementary School Teacher Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Elementary School Teacher in Lindsay:
"How long it takes for advancement."
Be prepared to wait a very long time for full time employment.

Elementary School Teacher in Ottawa:
"Your Professional Path."
I was hired 14 years ago to develop and run a science program in a Montessori elementary school. I love what I do as I developed an enriched science program that evolves with the needs of our society. It allows students to explore science as a passion and creatively investigate their curiosity about their surroundings. The stress level is only due to friction caused by the coworkers or school leader, otherwise I love what I do. I have a great relationship with my students & their parents. My Masters degree with 3 years of research background in petroleum industry and my B.Ed. Training has more than prepared me for my role in the school. To excel in any job a teacher should her/his passion and keep educating oneself to get better in what one does. Never forget to re-evaluate your professional growth and future growth in an organization & see if you have any more chance to grow or find a place that will provide that opportunity. Last but not least, learn how to negotiate for the salary.

Elementary School Teacher in Toronto:
"Teaching as a second (or third!) Career."
Hello - teaching jobs in Canada are few and far between. Most Boards are not hiring new teachers, particularly those who are in their early 20's, and this is their first "real" job! Most teachers today have a minimum of 2 degrees, many have a third degree, and have considerable career experiences outside of teaching. Students' needs are becoming far more complex, complicated by issues of generational poverty, mental health concerns, PTSD, non-English speakers (New Canadians), to list a few. Sadly, there are no longer the supports in place to allow teachers to simply (HAH!) ' teach'. You must also assume the role of social worker, agency reference point, and truant officer. My advice: please strongly re-consider going into teaching, unless you have the willingness and ability to work abroad; are tri-lingual; are more 'life-experienced' (ie. Have had other stressful careers; your own children; have a secondary wage earner). You can make far more money in other fields!!

Elementary School Teacher in Ottawa:
"Love children."
To deal with young children in a learning environment, you must be well organized, patient, and intuitive. You must enjoy young children and not be bothered by bits of chaos during the day. This is the most rewarding job in the world... but it is definitely not for everyone!
