In the case of a designer working at an established florist or store affiliated with a national brand, there will likely be established designs and arrangements the floral designer must be familiar with. In many companies, the floral designer’s job is not only being able to create these established designs, but also teach entry-level personnel and review their work. A floral designer typically works daytime hours during the week, with an emphasis on early mornings. Because of the prevalence of Saturday events (such as weddings), a designer should expect to work certain weekends as well.
Most businesses in the floral sector require a high school diploma or equivalent. Employers generally prefer previous experience with floral arrangements. In some cases, the company prefers to hire from within. Floral designers should keep an up-to-date portfolio of their work and a list of references for prospective employers.
