At the most basic level, HRIS should be able to streamline payroll and benefits information for a company's human resources (HR) department. The HRIS manager creates or utilizes a software platform that makes it easy for staff to enter basic payroll information including exemptions and withholding and deductions for each worker in the company. They adapt the system to incorporate all organization-specific requirements and eligibility for health benefits, paid time off, leave, and other necessities. The manager can then use the HRIS system to automate payroll functions with the company's payroll account.
Additionally, the HRIS manager likely is expected to make the platform usable for most users. This involves creating user accounts for employees, placing these employee accounts on tiered access availability and then offering ongoing training and support on the use of these systems and software. This allows all employees to make basic changes to personal information such as mailing addresses and phone numbers, as well as allows them to check benefit status and elect into adjustments during open insurance enrollment season.
To work as an HRIS manager, a person typically must have a degree in some computer-based discipline, either from a university or accredited technical school. The HRIS manager should be familiar with common programming languages such as Oracle or SQL to adjust HRIS software to meet the specific needs of the organization. As a manager, the HRIS head may have a small staff and may be required to submit budgets for his or her department. He or she typically works in an office environment, but may need to schedule occasional travel for software installation and employee training as well. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
