They may schedule, cancel, or reschedule appointments for patients. They may also answer phones and perform other customer service duties. When patients first arrive in the dental office, a hygiene coordinator may greet them and sign them in to be called back for their procedures. It is the hygiene coordinator’s job to inform patients of the procedures they are having done by giving handouts and answering any questions they may have. Keeping records and patient files in order is an essential aspect of a hygiene coordinator’s job as well. A hygiene coordinator may also do basic accounting at the end of the work day.
A high school diploma is normally the only degree a person will need to become a hygiene coordinator. Some dental offices may require that hygiene coordinators have previous experience in a dental office or as a secretary. Much of the training is on the job. There is room for advancement to office manager in some offices, after much time has been devoted to the job.
