This job requires carrying out heavy construction work, so the ability to perform physical labor, such as carrying heavy items and operating hand and power tools, is essential. Millwrights analyze and interpret layout plans, drawings, and blueprints in order to install equipment and ensure that it is properly aligned using manual and laser methods of alignment. They must always exercise a certain degree of caution to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the job. After particular jobs are complete, they must ensure that the area is left in the same clean state it was in prior to any work being done.
Basic mathematical skills are necessary in this position to carry out measurements and other essential tasks. Millwrights may or may not work under heavy supervision, so it is important to be self-driven and able to complete tasks independently and within specific time-frames. This job may also involve traveling from one location to another, so a valid driver’s license may be required by some employers. Formal study of and apprenticeship in this work may be required, while others positions simply require millwrights to have a "journeyman" status, which is usually acquired with experience and testing.
