Policy advisors spend the majority of their time researching, writing, and presenting reports, and they often work closely with policy analysts within the organization. While the analysts develop policies, the advisors must gather the necessary information to implement and support these policies. Organizational skills and close attention to detail are important in this position, and strong verbal and written communication skills are also important.
A bachelor's degree in business, political science, or a related field is generally required for this position, and some employers may prefer those who have a master's degree. Most policy advisors work for either the government or large corporations, so professionalism and adaptability to change are essential in this position, and some may also work primarily on partisan or non-partisan issues.
