Project Engineer Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Project Engineer in Toronto:
"The multiple types jobs you can get."
Take project management courses.

Project Engineer in St. Catharines:
"Do it for yourself!"
If you go to any engineering school seeking fame or fortune quit. Engineers in most circles are revered as know it all's who get everything wrong, by operators, constructors, and technicians. This is probably due to engineers who know how to take tests so that they may get a job one day and command a salary and notable respect and have no real passion for what they do. When in fact these type burn out or tend to make huge mistakes or are ignorant to others who may not be engineers but offer years of experience instead which misrepresents the engineering profession. My advice is be passionate in what you do, and source out all intel available as it may save your job someday. Most engineers are paid low when compared to their responsibilities/liabilities ( a welder in Alberta makes more than the engineer who designs the systems they're assembling), so those who are doing this line of work better enjoy it.

Project Engineer in Caraquet:
"Be accurate...stay put and get er done."
Be accurate as for bidding...time schedule realistic...quality control.

Project Engineer in Calgary:
"Think ahead"
Consider early how your current choices may impact your long-term career.

Project Engineer in Oshawa:
"No cost of living raises"
Little or no opportunity for raise at contract negotiation. What rate you come in at is what you make forever. Those hired after you with less experience will make more. Flex hours make this a great job for young patents so this is the trade off you make.
