Job Description for Safety Supervisor
Safety supervisors monitor and enforce safety measures, policies, and requirements determined by their organization and pertinent laws. The safety supervisor's tasks include completing regular safety checks (including job site inspections along with employee inspections), looking for unsafe work conditions, helping with safety projects, and ensuring that all safety recommendations are taken into effect. Most safety supervisors also are the individuals that investigate illnesses or injuries that take place at the job site. This includes a thorough inspection of any complaint, issue, or problem that workers or equipment may have. In addition, they are required to be kept current with any changes, additions, or removals of safety rules and regulations. This includes OSHA standards, department regulations, Environmental Protection Agency requirements, and other relevant regulations and laws.
Safety supervisors work in a number of different industries, but they frequently work in construction companies to enforce safety codes and regulations. They must have strong communication skills, be able to work well in a team setting, be a self starter, and be able to handle lots of information at once. Education is also important for in this position. Most companies prefer individuals who have a bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety or a related field. Some companies prefer an engineering degree, especially for those working at a construction site as a safety supervisor. The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is frequently preferred.
