Whether in journalism, publishing, or other online content creation, a message must be clear, correct, and properly formatted to be effective. Editors ensure this happens, and the senior editor oversees a team of editors to make sure the team's work conforms to standard. To do this, senior editors proofread submitted copy and ensure that the text is readable and accurate throughout the piece; they also make sure to spot any spelling or grammar errors that junior editors may have missed. To be successful as a senior editor, the successful applicant must have strong command of the English language (and/or other languages, if necessary). Attention to detail is vital, as the senior editor reads a substantial number of materials for grammar, spelling, and clarity. Being a supervisory position, the senior editor must also be a team player and have the skills necessary to coordinate that team into producing error-free and consistent work. As with many editing jobs, individuals may work longer hours as deadlines approach.
