Job Description for Director, Nursing

The director of nursing is a high-level manager who is responsible for the performance of a nursing unit. They are accountable for a number of tasks within their unit or department, including planning, organization, supervision, evaluation, and compliance.

Their primary responsibility is to oversee the nursing staff's needs; for example, this may include establishing operating procedures and procuring necessary equipment. They must also maintain a high level of organization for the unit to ensure that patients are cared for properly, promptly, and at reasonable cost. The director of nursing provides direction and supervision to the nursing staff by assigning tasks, offering suggestions for how to accomplish tasks, and offering training and educational opportunities. To ensure that the staff is performing at an acceptable level, the director of nursing also must ensure there are proper evaluation procedures and that they are in compliance with federal and local laws.

The director of nursing must be a registered nurse to comply with nursing regulations and to have the background knowledge to effectively manage a nursing staff; often, a bachelor's degree in nursing is required for certification. Since the director of nursing is one of - if not the - most senior nursing mangers, several years of nursing management experience is necessary.
