Job Description for Facilities Operations Manager

Facilities operations managers are responsible for ensuring periodic maintenance and repairs on equipment within a facility, and that the facility is clean and orderly at all times. They may also oversee renovation or remodeling efforts and, in some positions, the maintenance of yards, gardens, walkways, and other outdoor spaces.

These managers must ensure an adequate level of supplies is kept at all times, and may work with staff members such as building management and outside service vendors. Much of the work is done independently, but some coordination with others is occasionally necessary, so strong communication skills are important in this position. They must also work at a good pace to ensure that facilities are well-maintained at all times, and should have multitasking skills and basic knowledge of building systems such as HVAC and electrical panels. Some positions also require advanced skills in areas such as plumbing, electrical, or HVAC.

A high school diploma and prior experience may be minimum requirements for this position, and some employers also require a technical or associate's degree. Higher-level positions may require a bachelor's or masters degree in civil, mechanical, or technical engineering, and much of the work involves physical labor such as bending, stooping, lifting, and climbing.
