When it comes to location, the highest average paycheck (about $99K per year) can be spotted in Washington, DC; San Antonio, Texas ($62K), Tacoma, Wash. (approximately $54K), and Colorado Springs, Colo. (around $53K) are the next top-paying cities. Approaching the lower end of the pay scale (at $43K) is Killeen, Texas. Across U.S. Army's U.S. offices, employees in the state of Virginia earn the most, taking home $76K annually.

Years of Experience

For those with one to four years of experience, median paychecks reach about $38K per year. The greater proportion of employees (30 percent) report five to nine years of experience and bring home median pay of $50K annually.


Army Officers are the best paid with the average salary hovering at $76K per year; Logistics Managers, Operations Managers, and Information Technology Specialists also rank near the top of the list, pulling in $75K, around $68K, and approximately $46K, respectively. Near the bottom at U.S. Army are Diesel Mechanics, pulling in an average of just $38K.

Certifications and Degrees

Those lacking certification bring in much lower salaries than Project Management Professionals, who make around $92K annually. Certified Information Systems Security Professionals with credentials can live quite comfortably; median salaries come in at $84K per year. At U.S. Army, employees who hold a Master of Engineering (MEng / ME) receive the highest salaries at about $112K.


The highest-paying skill in this position seems to be Project Management; individuals who report it as part of the repertoire have a median income of $87K annually. Folks here also tend to know Operations Management; on the survey, about a seventh of workers named it in their skills portfolios. Employees also tend to know Microsoft Office, Leadership, and Microsoft Excel.


The number of male employees who participated in the survey outweighs the number of women; the male-to-female ratio is more than 3 to 1.

Benefits and Perks

As part of compensation, U.S. Army gives paid vacation to one in three employees and paid sick leave to a quarter of survey participants. A 401(k) program is available, and over a third of workers use it to save for retirement. Almost all respondents have health insurance, and benefits for most workers also include dental insurance. Perks also include tuition reimbursement, life insurance, gym membership, and relocation expenses.
