Broadcast meteorologists present weather forecasts and events on television. They must be able to gather and interpret meteorological data from satellites, radar, and surface and air stations, and they typically work in a studio but may occasionally work outdoors to present severe weather coverage. Broadcast meteorologists must be able to adhere to deadlines so that stories are presented on time, and a flexible schedule is often necessary to work overtime and holidays. Work hours may be irregular, and they should be able to use alert systems to disseminate necessary information and advise the public regarding how to prepare for extreme weather. It is always important to keep up with the latest developments and stories, and they may also have research duties to determine why certain weather phenomena are occurring and what they mean for the future. Expertise in social media may also be necessary to communicate with the public. A bachelor's degree and certification as a meteorologist are generally required for this position.
