They must be creative and artistic. They must have leadership and managerial skills. Editorial directors and their staff must use trusted and dependable sources to write feature stories and/or news items. They must instruct their staff to conduct thorough research prior to publishing stories and news. They must be able to write exceptionally well. They must have a strong background and experience in marketing, social media, and various online community forums. They must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. They are often required to work long hours, in order to meet publication deadlines. They must have interpersonal skills. They may work directly with clients or advertisers. They must review and approve publication content and make changes as necessary.
Most editorial directors have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in creative writing, social media, or another relevant field. Editorial directors must communicate well, orally and in writing. They must evaluate their staff on a regular basis, in accordance with their company’s guidelines, policies, and procedures. They must provide timely feedback. They must be fair and ethical.
