A general merchandise manager is the person who is primarily responsible for managing all inventories and merchandise within an organization or store. This person will primarily work in an indoor environment, as long as the store is indoors. Minimal travel may be required, as this position may require traveling to other stores within the district. A general merchandise manager will typically be found in a retail type of environment. As far as formal educational requirements are concerned, many organizations value experience over education. Many organizations often require at least 3 years of experience within a general merchandise department and 10 years of experience in the field in general.
