Laboratory directors oversee the functioning of the laboratory under their supervision. On a day-to-day basis, laboratory directors are responsible for overseeing staffing needs in the laboratory and hiring appropriate people to fill needed positions. They may also be in charge of conducting background checks if the nature of the work requires it, handling regular performance reviews, and confirming that laboratory staffers are all qualified for the positions they fill. In addition, laboratory directors must balance the budget and other requirements (such as space) for projects performed in the laboratory. These directors may help facilitate the seeking of grants or securing assistance for projects as well.
