Legal interns are tasked with assisting lawyers with their cases and the day-to-day operations of their employers. They spend a great deal of time researching prior legislation, precedents in court cases, etc. and writing about their research findings. They may work directly with clients during consultation processes, so customer service skills, interpersonal skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills are important in this position.
Employers generally require that candidates for legal internships are currently attending law school or have recently graduated. Computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and the ability to research using the internet are required, and some interns may also be required to enter clients' records into computer databases. Travel may occasionally be necessary to accompany lawyers to clients’ locations, and they must be flexible, as their hours may vary depending on their employer's or clients’ needs. Some clients are available after regular office hours, and interns may occasionally work on Saturdays to meet with them. Some may also need to train new interns. (Copyright 2019 PayScale.com)
