Maintenance machinists generally implement and maintain industrial machinery, and are often employed by chemical plants and manufacturing facilities. Maintenance machinists must be proficient with both hand tools and power tools, including mills, grinders, and other welding tools. Some positions require machinists to develop plans relating to how the work is carried out; some of this planning may be done on a computer, so computer skills are highly beneficial.
The job will often require machinists to work in loud environments, possibly around hazardous materials and conditions. Knowledge of electrical systems, pneumatic systems, metal work, and hydraulic systems may be required for the position. The work is often strenuous and requires much physical strength, so physical testing may be administered prior to obtaining the job.
