Nursing directors oversee staff, providing guidance and discipline as necessary; these directors often play a role in the hiring process for nurses as well. They help develop and finalize budgets, and they then must handle cost control and ensure their department remains within that budget. Additionally, nursing directors oversee their department's communication with physicians and other health care professionals in areas such as patient needs. Education and experience requirements for nursing directors vary by institution. However, a bachelor's degree in nursing is generally the minimum educational requirement, as well as licensing to work in their employer's state.
