Operations Manager, Retail Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Operations Manager, Retail in Chester:
"DO what the boss wants accomplished, Not what he says!"
Keep as much of your opinions to yourself, and encourage your employees to do the same. When one complains about another. Take them to the other employee and have them repeat what they told you. They will stop this behavior if confronted with their own actions. The less they know about you the harder it is for them to attack you. Hard work and attention to details gave you this opportunity. In all jobs, I took the time to make changes that made my job easier, I always learned from the senior employee that produced the most with the least amount of effort. I tried so hard to teach my employees to think, to be learn the skills necessary to perform at a higher level. The first year went very well, but I was injured and having to step back and depend on my crew. Well, there was one who we called "Snag" when asked to do something, "It wasn't fair" When trying to expand the stores services he objected to my boss the loudest. He was the "Snag" that cost me credibility & my job.

Operations Manager, Retail in Houston:
"Frustration."
Most of what I have learned has been self taught. Unfortunately the retail business, especially furniture because they are not take with items, have a lot of emotions that go along with them. You must rely on someone else to supply you with the merchandise, it is not just something that you put on a hook on a shelf and they help themselves. Ask as many questions as possible and don't be afraid to ask for help. Give yourself at least 20 minutes in your day to be quiet...most of the time everyone is either asking for your help or directed to you for help. Make a routine for yourself and try to stick to it. Most important...find an outlet.
