They assist customers over the phone, fulfilling requests and orders for parts; if the part is not in stock, they must advise the customer if there is another suitable replacement and alert the customer when the order comes in.
If a customer returns a defective part, they must identify the defect and either exchange it for a new part or return the customer’s money. If an identical replacement is not in stock, they must place a new order or see if there is another part that can be substituted.
A parts counterman typically is tasked with monitoring inventory. They see how much of any specific part is in stock and write down the item numbers when new product needs to be ordered. They perform these duties under the supervision of a manager.
If a customer does not know the specific part they need, the parts counterman is expected to be able to accurately identify the part required and help the customer with their request. They may be able to locate a customer’s purchase history in order to help them. They may also listen to the customer’s description of the problems that they’re having and recommend a suitable fix.
