A bachelor’s degree or higher in broadcasting, journalism, communications, or a related field may be required for this position, and relevant prior experience and managerial skills are also necessary. These producer-directors must have strong leadership and communication skills to lead and build teamwork among employees, and they must be able to multitask and ensure that their staff meet all deadlines. They must also have sound judgement and decision-making skills to achieve their stations' goals.
Producer-directors of TV/cable broadcasts must be able to delegate duties by recognizing specific talents among staff and approve programs, content, and schedules to be broadcast by the station. They must have thorough knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and ensure the station's compliance at all times, and they must adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws. They should also be familiar with their organizations' computer systems and Microsoft Office programs, and some travel may occasionally be necessary to attend community events and relevant conferences.
