The position generally requires at least an associate’s degree, and it often requires experience in the health care field. The coordinator makes sure that patients’ benefits deem them eligible for their organization's services. Then the referral coordinator obtains proper authorization for the services. The referral coordinator is also responsible for obtaining authorization for the patient to receive services at referred medical practices. When the referrals are denied, the coordinator must notify the physician and patient.
In smaller practices, the referral coordinator may also be tasked with other duties. These duties may include preparing patient charts for doctors and organizing patient test results and files. The referral coordinator must file authorized referrals for doctors so that they can be reviewed. The patient records may also have to be passed on to other medical entities. The referral coordinator may also set up appointments for patients and remind them about upcoming appointments. Additionally, The referral coordinator may have front desk duties such as answering phones, and assisting with patient check-ins.
