Research and development managers lead a team of employees in conducting research and development for an organization. This may include investigating technology development, concept development, and new product development, among other areas. Many times, research and development teams work to improve an existing product or service. They identify areas for improvement and how any changes might be conducted. Research and development managers oversee this process and suggest recommendations to the organization's leaders.

Research and development managers oversee the daily activities of a team of employees who research designs, concepts, and services. They help develop a budget for the plan and ensure that the team is working within that plan. They also ensure that goals and objectives are being met.

To become a research and development manager, a master’s or doctorate degree is required, usually in engineering, biochemistry, physics, or a related field. Prior research and development experience is expected, and potential applicants must be qualified to lead a team.
