Job Description for Research & Development (R&D) Technician

Research & development (R&D) technicians work within the development and research efforts of their organization and are in charge conducting research on a variety of topics and writing extensive reports based on their results.

The main responsibilities of R&D technicians focus on managing development programs and modifying specific features to improve efficiency. They often work with other technicians in team settings to achieve all goals within given time-frames; however, they must also work well on their own with minimal supervision. They generally use a personal computer to keep accurate files, perform research tasks using the internet, and help conceptualize, design, and build prototypes depending on project requirements. They must also have strong communication and multitasking skills to relay ideas and work well with other development/manufacturing technicians.

R&D technicians must create strong business relationships with vendors and often gain experience by working alongside suppliers. One of their main tasks involves testing and analyzing the feasibility of products and service launches, so organizational skills and close attention to detail are important. They also analyze processing and other packaging options and identify flaws during their creation processes to make them more efficient and require less company resources.

A bachelor's degree in research analysis, development management, engineering, or a related field is generally required for this position, and prior experience in a relevant work capacity is highly beneficial. Industry certifications are also helpful. (Copyright 2019 PayScale.com)
