Job Description for Retail Merchandiser

Retail merchandisers are responsible for the coordination of merchandise activity among store locations. They are the primary contact between store general managers and their retail chain. Retail merchandisers control inventory by monitoring current holdings, sales reports, and inventory reports to ensure stores are neither over- nor understocking particular items; they also adjust this balance as purchasing trends shift in their region, reducing inventory for low-selling products and expanding inventory in better-selling products. With access to data from multiple stores in their service area and the company-wide data, retail merchandisers can provide general managers with information on current trends, as well as upcoming sales, promotions, and product lines. Retail merchandisers are also responsible for ensuring that each store represents the company well in terms of aesthetics and proper employee training and behavior.
