Senior claims adjusters work in the insurance field, often in a supervisory capacity. They oversee claims made on policies within their field or area. They also may work with junior adjusters to process and make final decisions in the claims process based upon those junior adjusters' recommendation.

The main part of a senior claims adjuster’s career is to be a decision maker. They are called upon to make decisions on incident claims by insured customers on validity and the claimant's policy coverage. A senior claims adjuster may have a junior adjuster under his or her supervision that can be dispatched to do hands-on, eyewitness inspections and assessments. That being said, the senior adjuster should also expect to spend significant time “in the field” to make their own valuations and judgments.

The senior claims adjuster normally has a close working relationship to the insurance agents who may be the "point people” when individuals make claims. The adjuster also works closely with these insured entities to meet and address their needs. They process claims according to the standards of the policy and company, as well as adhering to any local or state regulations as needed.

A senior claims adjuster should be proficient with computers, and they need to have a talent for organization, as much of their job involves both writing and filing claims information. Most companies require at least an associate’s degree, but many look for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Most importantly, a senior adjuster needs prior experience in the insurance field, usually at least three years spent working as a junior claims adjuster being the preferred starting point.
