Telephone technicians are often tasked with installing and repairing telephone systems and must be be good with their hands, as this work involves assembling and reassembling small computer hardware and telephone equipment. Some employers provide on-the-job training for this position, and these technicians must always stay updated regarding the best practices for installing phones, as technology is constantly changing and at an ever-faster pace. They must also understand why and how each part of the phone is used, specifically the wiring and lower-quality components, to prevent sub-optimal wiring configurations, and a willingness to grow and learn within the position is essential for success.
